Rules of the open road Posted on May 12th
For first-timers, here are a few matters of etiquette to look like a pro.
60 DEGREES OF SEPARATION: Everyone’s temperature threshold is different, but 60 degrees is a reasonable minimum temperature for going topless.
BACK-SEAT DIPLOMACY: Riding in the front seat, where you have the benefit of a windshield, is one thing. But the back seat of a ragtop can get pretty hairy—as in messy and windblown. Keep a couple of baseball caps handy and encourage passengers to wear them backward (they won’t blow off as easily) or get close-cropped haircuts. Spare sunglasses are also a nice touch. And don’t blast the stereo; it’s noisy enough back there.
THE PASSENGER’S (ALMOST) ALWAYS RIGHT: If a passenger asks you (nicely) to put the top up, for whatever reason, kindly oblige. But pull over and stop first. If a passenger asks you to put the top down, but you don’t want to, politely but firmly decline. If the passenger really wants to experience the great outdoors, nothing beats walking.
